Having just spent six weeks in the Netherlands, three of them were at the University of Amsterdam attending an urban planning program called Planning the Cycling City... I know, who goes on vacation and goes back to school? For me, this was the highlight of my vacation and I walked away with a host of essential skills that support meaningful understanding of developing and fostering cycling cities. What I have discovered is that the Dutch have built better cities. The streetscape is beautiful; the noise-scape is filled with sounds of bicycles and people talking. The car is the guest and children have autonomy and the ability to ride their bikes to explore beyond their community.
